While most of us are heading home after work, Jim Hughes, ADESA Lexington transportation team member, is preparing for another busy evening. Jim makes his usual stops at local bakeries, restaurants and grocery stores to collect food items to deliver to area soup kitchens, group homes and homeless shelters. He also picks up donated items to deliver to an area thrift store whose profits support a local children’s group home for the mentally challenged.
Community involvement is one of ADESA’s core values, and one that Jim also embraces in his everyday life. He is one of the founding members of “Love Thy Neighbor of the Bluegrass,” a non-profit organization that’s dedicated to helping the less fortunate by assisting other non-profits.
Jim has been of service to others as long as he can remember. In his early twenties, he volunteered to be the Easter Bunny and Santa Claus for area churches and children’s hospitals. He also assisted with blood drives and volunteered at soup kitchens. This opened his eyes to the fact that there were many different organizations that needed help.
Talk to his coworkers, and you’ll learn that Jim is pretty modest about all that he does to give back to his local community and help others in need. But actually, Jim and his organization have assisted approximately 130 non-profit groups during the years. When you consider that after a full day’s work, he travels as many as 170 miles to deliver the donated items and then factor in the cost of gas and other expenses that he pays out-of-pocket—his commitment is obvious.
We want to thank Jim for all that he does for ADESA Lexington, our customers and his community.
