I hear from dealers all the time about how hard it’s gotten to find quality used vehicles.

After doing a little digging, I found that the numbers back up the claim—according to an Edmunds Used Vehicle Market Report, there were less than six million trade-ins that averaged 6 years of age in 2017.

The fact of the matter is, fewer vehicles are being traded in at new-car franchise dealerships, bringing higher value retention for 8- to 15-year-old vehicles. This all results in fewer options for dealers looking for clean, older vehicles at a reasonable wholesale price.

With the outlook for the foreseeable future not looking much better, dealerships need to invest in digital strategies and technologies designed to catch those remaining good used vehicles.
