Mike Jones has been a general sales manager for ADESA Golden Gate since July 2016. We recently caught up with Mike to talk about his rewarding—and fast-paced—career as a general sales manager.

What does a typical day as an ADESA general sales manager look like?

One of the things I enjoy most about working for ADESA is you never know what each day is going to bring. While each day is a little different—and that’s what keeps it exciting—I make it a point to connect with my sales teams every day.

We discuss our priorities and set up a game plan for how we’re going to tackle them. When I talk with my sales staff, I ask them their thoughts on the market, what’s trending and who their prospects are. It’s a team effort.

What makes for a successful general sales manager at ADESA?

Great customer service. One of the best parts about working in this industry is the amazing customers. Car dealers are good people who work hard. For them to trust you, you need to show that you care about them and their success.

At the end of the day, if they’re successful—you’re successful. A lot of our customers are self-employed and, obviously, need to make money for their business to survive and thrive. I have a close relationship with many of our dealers and touch base with them frequently.

Can you tell me about a time you solved a challenge in your position?

We have customers who come to our auction sites who don’t know about all the different products and services we offer—and have never used them. I recently helped a customer who wanted to learn how to search and buy cars online. So, I sat with him and walked him through the steps to download and use our mobile app.

How big of a role does technology play in your position?

Online technology greatly impacts my role and the role of our sales team. I would say 80 to 90 percent of dealers research cars they are interested in buying on one of our online platforms before they come to the auction.

It’s important that my team is able to help customers find this information online, as well as use ADESA.com to buy vehicles.

What do you like most about working in the auto auction industry?

Definitely sale day and all the preparation that goes into each one. We have a dedicated sale day each week where customers come to buy and sell cars. It’s an amazing atmosphere.

I enjoy the speed and energy of sale day—it’s electric. We work hard all week for sale day, and to watch it all come together and have a successful sale, that makes our jobs very fulfilling.
