ADESA Canada’s Wesley Kent

This is a guest post by Wesley Kent, VP of programs and operations for ADESA Canada.

During the 2019 Auto Remarketing Canada (ARC) Conference, I had the pleasure of congratulating ADESA Canada Engineering Manager Hilton Lee on his much-deserved recognition during the Remarketing’s Under 40 awards luncheon.

I recently spoke with Hilton to learn more about him, his role, trends in mobile technology and his time working on products for ADESA and OPENLANE.

What does a typical day as an engineering manager at ADESA look like?

I am responsible for overseeing the OPENLANE mobile team and mobile application development. The mobile applications we have developed include the ADESA Marketplace app, OPENLANE private-label turn-in apps, image capture app (ICA) and self-inspection app (SIA).

A typical workday for me includes checking with the team on status, facilitating major design discussions and working with the leadership team to resolve impediments. I work closely with the product and technical leaders on mobile strategy and plan. Recently, I also have had opportunities to extend my responsibilities to oversee some server-side teams and development.

How has mobile technology evolved since you first started in the business?

Mobile technology has evolved to become part of our lives. Nowadays, mobile devices are very powerful, with many features we only dreamed of a decade ago—like foldable, wireless charging, mobile payment and image and voice recognition.

App development has become easier and more efficient than before. At the same time, devices and apps are becoming smarter as people continue to add intelligent features to them. It’s very exciting to see how mobile technology continues to evolve.

What is your favorite part of working at ADESA?

My favorite part of ADESA is the innovative, entrepreneurial and high-performing culture. I enjoy the opportunities to contribute ideas and working with talented leaders and professionals to embrace technology in the auto remarketing industry.

What new projects are you most excited to work on?

During the hackathon last year, the mobile team came across an innovative idea to enhance images using deep learning artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, and successfully completed a proof-of-concept.

I’m also excited about the transformation projects on both mobile and server sides. While we are modernizing our server-side technologies, we are also enhancing our mobile development to leverage the hybrid and responsive web technologies.

What is your favorite car or vehicle of all time?

I like convertible cars—the Mercedes-Benz convertible is one of my favorites. However, I haven’t had the chance to own it yet, as my wife says it’s not practical.

Tell us a bit about yourself. What do you enjoy doing outside work?

I enjoy watching movies, TED Talks and documentaries. I also enjoy traveling and spending time with my two-year-old daughter. We have been to Hong Kong and Las Vegas and have taken a Disney cruise to Bermuda. I’m looking forward to more adventures with my family.
