Average wholesale prices in May were flat versus April but up on a year-over-year basis, primarily due to the strength of truck prices and a younger mix resulting from off-lease supply growth.  As introduced last month, a drill-down into the data clearly reveals price softening when accounting for sale type and vehicle age, model class...

Average wholesale prices in April were up on both a month-over-month and year-over-year basis. As has been stated repeatedly in previous months, however, much of these supposed increases in used vehicle values are the result of strength in truck prices and growth in off-lease volumes. An analysis of sales prices by sale type, model-year age,...

The tale of two markets resumed in March, as wholesale prices were below year-ago levels for cars and above prior year for trucks. Nevertheless, both groups showed price increases versus February’s unseasonably soft results, as retail sales and wholesale activity showed signs of the traditional spring/tax season market typical for used vehicles. Watch the March...

Further concrete evidence of price softening appeared in February as prices uncharacteristically, and unseasonably, softened rather than firmed versus January. Watch the February...

Considering the increased supply of used vehicles wholesaled in January, used vehicle prices held up surprisingly well, despite soft retail demand and high new vehicle incentives. Nevertheless, pockets of supply-driven weakness did appear in rental program and risk units, and younger vehicles in general. Watch the January Kontos Kommentary below: To read the entire Kontos...

Wholesale prices did a bit of an about-face in December, as truck price softening, perhaps influenced by higher gasoline prices, drove down overall results. New vehicle incentive activity also remained high, which, along with higher fleet sales, helped the year close out with a new record in sales but put downward pressure on wholesale values....

Trucks continue to drive overall average wholesale prices upward, while car price softening more directly reflects supply growth for the used vehicle market in general. A new threat to used vehicle prices seems to be arising from increased new vehicle incentives, which have been relatively benign through this cycle of price softening, but which we...

The softening wholesale price environment became more apparent in October, as wholesale supply continues to grow while retail demand weakened. A point I have not seen noted by other analysts is that new vehicle sales for the year finally fell behind last year’s year-to-date levels, indicating that 2016 will not match 2015 record in total...
