ADESA Syracuse Outside Sales Rep Steve Ruston

What does a typical day as an ADESA outside sales rep look like?

Each day is different, and that’s what makes my job exciting. I’m usually on the road, except for our weekly sale day when it’s all hands on deck at the auction.

On a typical day, I might see 10 or more dealers. It might be a quick meeting, just to check in and see if there’s anything ADESA can do to help make their job easier.

Or, it might be a longer meeting to discuss a new product or to show a dealer how to buy and sell cars on one of our online platforms. Each visit is different, depending on the customer’s needs.

What makes for a successful outside sales rep at ADESA?

Like every sales position, you need perseverance. You’re going to be told “no” at times, but you learn from it. Before long, you’ll hear “yes” a lot more.

Can you tell us about a time you solved a challenge in your position?

When I started at ADESA, I saw an opportunity for us to work with more of the larger franchise dealerships in our area. At first, it was challenging to make some of these connections. But I was successful in building those relationships over time, and it has been rewarding to attract this new business.

How big of a role does technology play in your position?

A large part of my role is educating customers about our online offerings. This includes teaching dealers how to find, buy and sell cars on ADESA.com and through the ADESA mobile app.

Technology has grown astronomically in this industry. Dealers can buy vehicles at any ADESA auction location with a tap of a finger, even from the golf course if that’s their preference.

What do you like most about working in the auto auction industry?

It’s exciting and fast-paced. It’s incredible to go out every day and convince new customers to partner with us, and then see their business improve because of it. Seeing new faces walk into the auction on sale day—maybe because of a recent meeting—is very rewarding.

Our industry is fun, fast-paced and competitive—and filled with the best people who are passionate about what they do. If you’d like to join our team, check out our open positions on LinkedIn.
